Detectives found about 6,000 pounds of large gauge, commercial copper wire Wednesday at a Bakersfield residence being used as an illegal recycling center, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.
Rural crime detectives served a search warrant in the 3000 block of Belle Terrace after investigating several copper wire thefts across the county in recent weeks, a KCSO news release said. Most people involved in copper wire thefts will strip the wire of its insulation so that it is bare copper wire and recycle it for more money.
